One busy morning, Mother Cat sat down and wrote a letter.

Her youngest kittens were very sad.

They had never been to town without Mother Cat.
她们从来没有不在猫妈妈的陪伴下，独自去过镇上。

But Mother Cat was fair.

She knew the little kittens were right.

It was their turn,after all.
也该轮到她们了。
Mother Cat gave the letter to her youngest yellow kitten, and a coin to her youngest blue kitten.
猫妈妈把信交给她最小的小黄猫咪，把一个硬币交给小蓝猫咪。
Now go straight to the Post Office, buy a stamp, and mail this very important letter.
现在去邮局，买一枚邮票，然后把这封非常重要的信寄出去。
Proud and puffed-up, the happy kittens started on their way to town.
信心满满的，开心的小猫踏上了去镇上的路。
The cat caught the rat,Heigh-o the derry-o,The cat caught the rat.

The road ahead seemed to go on and on forever.
前的路，看上去怎么都走不完。
Each step took the kittens farther and farther away from home.
每走一步，小猫咪们离家就越来越远了。
Suddenly, Yellow Kitten began to wonder and worry about scarey things.
突然，小黄猫咪开始担心一些可怕的事情。
"What if something bad happens? What if you lose Mother's coin?"
“如果发生一些不好的事情怎么办呢？如果你把妈妈的硬币丢了怎么办？”
That would be bad.
这样会很糟糕。
"What if I sneeze," Blue Kitten agreed," and the coin jumps out of my paw?"
如果我打喷嚏了怎么办？小蓝猫说，“然后硬币就会从我的手里掉出去。”
"And it starts rolling away,"Yellow Kitten added,"faster and faster and faster?"
小黄猫补充到：“它会开始滚着走，而且会越滚越快。”

I'm not the Ginger bread Man, but I can roll as fast as he ran.

"And then it hides,"Blue Kitten said," and we cannot find it?"

But the scaredy cats did not turn back.
但是胆小的猫咪并没有退缩。
They walked on down the road to town.

Before long, the kittens came to the bridge.

Suddenly, Bule kitten began to wonder and worry about scarey things.
突然，小蓝猫咪开始想象和担心一些可拍的事情。
"What if something awful happen when we cross over?
“如果我们过河的时候，有一些可怕的事情发生怎么办？
What if someone sreals Mother's coin?"
如果有人偷了妈妈的硬币？”
How awful.
多糟糕啊！
"What if a giant troll cat jumps up out of the water," Yellow Kitten agreed,"growling and yowling at us?"
小黄猫很赞同地说道：“如果从水里钻出来一只巨大的怪物猫，对着我们又喊又叫该怎么呀？”
Grrrrr yowl!
啊！
"And he grabs us and shakes us,"
“它还可能抓着我们，摇晃我们，”
Blue Kitten added,"and wants to eat us up?"
小蓝猫同意地说道：“它想把我们吃掉？”
I'm going to eat you for my snack.
我要把你们当零食吃掉。
"And he sees the coin shining in our paws," Yellow Kitten said,"and takes it from us?"
小黄猫说道：它可能还会看到我们手上闪闪的硬币，它会拿走硬币。
The scaredy cats thought about turning back,but they kept on going.
胆小的猫咪们想着要退缩，但是他们还是继续前进了。
On the other side of the bridge, the kittens tiptoed into the forest.
在桥的另外一边，小猫咪们蹑手蹑手地在森林里走着。
Suddenly,Yellow Kitten began to wonder and worry about scarey things.
突然，小黄猫又开始担心一些可怕的事情。
"What if something dreaful happens? What if I lose Mother's letter?"
“如果有一些可怕的事情发生怎么办呢？如果我把妈妈的信弄丢了怎么办呢？”
How dreadful.
多么糟糕啊。
"What if a howling wind comes along?"Blue Kitten agreed,"and rips the letter out of your paws?"
“如果大风来了怎么办了？” 小蓝猫问，“如果大风撕扯你的信怎么办了？”
"And the wind throws the letter down into the leaves?" Yellow Kitten added.
“它会不会把信吹到满地的树叶里去了？”小黄猫问。
"And we look and look for it,until we are grey and whiskered," Blue Kittens said,"but never find it?"
小蓝猫补充到：我们找呀找，直到我们都变老了，长满了胡须都找不到它呢？
By whiskers,we're bound to find it soon.
就算用我们长长的胡子，我们也一定要尽快找到它。

Even though the scaredy cats wanted to go back home,they kept on walking through the forest.
尽管胆小的猫咪们很想回家，但是他们还是继续前进走过森林了。
Soon, they came to the long, dark tunnel.
很快，他们就来到长长的黑暗的隧道这里。
Suddenly, Blue Kitten began to wonder and worry about scarey things.
突然，小蓝猫开始担心起一些可怕的事情。
"What if something terrible happens? What if someone steals Mother's letter?"
“如果有可怕的事情发生怎么办？如果有人偷走妈妈的信怎么办？”
How terrible.
多么可怕呀。
"What if cat-bandits are inside,waiting for uw?" Yellow Kitten agreed.
小黄猫说：“如果洞里有强盗等着我们怎么办呀？”
Heh,heh,heh!
嘿嘿嘿！
Shhhhhhhhhh! Here they come.
嘘嘘嘘，他们来了。
"What if they have claws like knives,"
“如果他们有像刀子一样锋利的爪子，”
Blue Kitten added,"and red-gleaming cat eyes?"
还有红红的，闪闪的眼睛怎么办呀？
"And they surround us,"Yellow Kitten said,"and tie us up with ropes,and leave us shivering in the dark,cold tunnel?"
小黄猫说：他们把我们包围了，用绳子把我们绑在又冷又黑的山洞里怎么办？
I'm cold.
我好冷啊。
Me too.
我也是。
Still, the scaredy cats kept on going, through the tunnel and out the other side.
虽然两只小猫咪很害怕，但是他们还是继续前进，穿过隧道，到达另外一边。
There,they found the nettle field.
在那里，她们发现了一片荨麻田。
The kittens walked on through the tall weeds.
小猫咪们穿过高高的杂草。
Suddenly,Yellow Kitten began to wonder and worry about scarey things.
突然，小黄猫开始担心一些可怕的事情。
"What if something woeful happens? What if we get lost?"
他说：如果有不幸的事情发生怎么办？如果我们迷路了呢？
How woeful.
那样真的太不幸了。
"What if an evil cat-witch casts a spell,"
“如果我们遇上巫师对我们施魔法，”
Blue Kitten agreed,"and turns the whole world into nettle fields?"
小蓝猫说，“他会不会把全世界都变成荨麻地？”
"And all the cats and towns are lost and hidden in the nettles,"Yellow Kitten added,
“全世界的猫咪和城镇都会被荨麻覆盖，” 小黄猫回答，
Goosey-Goosey Gander,

The scaredy cats wished they could go back home, but they walked on through the nettles, until they came to the high,rocky ledge.
这两只胆小的猫咪真希望能够回家去，但是他们没有退缩，继续往前走，穿过了荨麻地，来到高高的山崖边。
Suddenly,Blue Kitten began to wonder and worry about scarey things.
突然，小蓝猫又开始担心不好的事情了。
"What if something hideous happens?
“如果有可怕的事情发生怎么办？
What if someone steals us?"
如果有人来偷我们呢？”
How hideous.
太可怕了。
"What if a great,screeching bird snatches us?" Yellow Kitten agreed.
小黄猫非常同意地说道：“如果有一只尖叫的大鸟把我们抓走怎么办呢？”
Screech.
发出刺耳的声音。
"And takes us to its nest,high on a mountain top,"Blue Kitten added.
“把我们抓到它的窝里去，那个窝在高高的山顶上。” 小蓝猫说。
"And,"Yellow Kitten said,"we have to feed and care for its ugly babies."
到时候，我们还要替它喂养它丑丑的宝宝。
Even now, the scaredy cats kept on going.They did not turn back.
即使到现在，两只担心的猫咪，还是继续前进，没有退缩。
Watch your step. Follow my tail.
小心点，抓住我的尾巴。
Hurray! At the bottom of the ledge, the kittens came into town, and the Post Office was not hard to find.
万岁！下了山崖之后就到镇子上了，而且邮局也不难找。
Look! There it is!Let's go!
看呀！它在那里，我们快走吧！
But when they ran up to the door, a truly bad and awful and dreadful and terrible and woeful and hideous thing happened.
但是当他们跑到邮局的时候，最糟糕，最可怕的事情发生了。
The Post Office was closed for the day.

The kittens told her about Mother's very important letter,and about the scarey things.

We carried Mother's coin and letter.
我们带着妈妈的硬币和信。
Troll Cat,and wind,and bandits,and nettles and bird…
有妖怪猫，大风，强盗，荨麻地和大鸟……
When Grandmother Cat looked at the letter, it was her turn to be surprised.
当猫奶奶看到这封信的时候，她很惊讶。
The letter was for her!
这封信是给她写的！
She opened it,and read out loud.
她打开后大声读出来。
Dear Grandmother Cat, Why don't you come for a visit?
亲爱的猫奶奶，你怎么不来家里玩呢？
